Last month, SYBER: Events returned to Perth, Western Australia. Having emerged from the city’s sparse electronic underground as the brainchild of Filipino-Australian DJ/producer Tye Turner, the series has transformed Perth into a thriving hub for global dance subculture, bringing together up-and-coming selector DJs from around the world. On February 7th, the date of the anticipated SYBER: 015, Indonesian-Australian DJ/producer and vocalist known behind the decks as Baby J seized the spotlight in her seventh series appearance, delivering nothing short of a masterclass in genre fluency, track selection, and pacing.

Having graced the SYBER stage alongside global talents including Talisha (UK), BaddieJuice (Melbourne), Turner (Perth), and the previously Niteharts-bound Boiler Room legend riria (Japan), Baby J has promptly solidified her standing as a leading tastemaker not just in the world of dance music, but in the dance music of the world. Seamlessly blending bass genres from jersey club to reggaeton, and from trap to baile funk and favela, Baby J pulls selections from every corner of the earth to produce an eclectic blend of diverse, cutting-edge sounds.

An overnight sensation, Baby J began her DJ career three years ago simply as Jess, from the comfort of her own bedroom. Upon receiving notification of an open demo call from Turner for the fledgling SYBER: 003, she quickly tucked herself behind her home DJ controller, submitting a cold mix which immediately captured the attention of the event’s organizers. With her vibrant edits, underground selections, pristine transitions, and patient pacing, Baby J rode the wave of online virality, catapulting herself to the precipice of global selector DJ stardom. Now, as she continues to climb the ranks of the world’s most talented trailblazers, her performance in February’s SYBER: 015 proves that Baby J is here to stay.

Throughout the hour-long set, Baby J showcases her expansive selection bank, merging heavy drums and filthy basslines with off-kilter grooves and airy vocals. Averaging roughly a minute and a half per track, she fearlessly pushes the envelopes of tempo and energy, effortlessly controlling her crowd through clever, unpredictable mashups and moments wrought with such palpable tension that listeners will find themselves racked with euphoric relief when a bassline finally kicks back in. Complementing her technical prowess, her visible joy is infectious, bringing a splendid levity to her performance that simply demands a smile (or a bass face).

Baby J’s mission, however, is greater than fame or flashing lights. “I love mixing genres from all parts of the world,” she says in an interview with SYBER: Events. “I want people to feel safe and welcome at my shows.”

“SYBER has been such a safe space to be myself,” she continues. “I don’t feel like I’m subordinate to anyone else on the lineup because I just feel so equal, which I haven’t felt all the time as a DJ.”

Baby J would like this equality to be felt by others, having also cemented herself as a fierce advocate for greater representation of women in dance music: an industry which has historically marginalized and mistreated its female artists. “I think we’re very underrepresented in this industry, especially,” she says. “I want for girls that are wanting to be a part of this space to know that they can do it as well.”

Baby J is now booked for a North America debut. More to be announced.
